IMU Navi Mumbai Campus also popularly known as Training Ship Chanakya is the premiere Maritime Training Institute of India. T.S Chanakya (and its predecessors) has a proven record of excellence in Maritime training for almost a century. Our vision is to inspire and shape the marine world by providing excellent maritime education and training. Going by our motto–“ज्ञान समुद्र समुद्रम ज्ञान” meaning “knowledge of Oceans in an ocean of Knowledge”, the vision of the IMU is to provide quality education and training, to undertake research of International standard, to become an institution of excellence providing advice, support to the Government on Maritime affairs.
Training Ship Chanakya (T.S. Chanakya) is the shore based successor to the Training Ship Dufferin (1927-1972) and Training Ship Rajendra (1972-1993), where the training of Merchant Navy Officers in India started in the year 1927. Training on T.S. Dufferin and subsequently T.S. Rajendra continued till the year 1993. After that it was replaced by shore-based academy namely Training Ship Chanakya- one of the first pre-sea training institution in India. In 2008, this campus came under Indian Maritime University. In 2017 it was named as Indian Maritime University, Navi Mumbai Campus.
The Nautical Sciences training program is balance between Academics and practical training including Simulator session. The curriculum is designed, to inculcate “Officer like Qualities” and a higher sense of discipline amongst the cadets. Physical training is an essential part of the curriculum to keep them fit, to undertake the tough and adventurous career at sea and ashore alike. Academics are at the forefront of the training regime, with due care and diligence given to the continued upgrading of infrastructure. IMU- NMC has been updating the curricular and Pedagogical methods to suit the need of a dynamic Marine Environment and exposing our students to the best practices in the Maritime Industry not only in India but all over the world. Our alumni have distinguished themselves in various Shipping Companies through their capability, sincerity and dedication. Our faculties have rich experience both on board ships and in the education putting their best efforts in teaching, nurturing, counseling and preparing excellent seafarers to join merchant ships across the globe. The institution has been awarded with Grade “A1” by IRS during CIP inspection in October 2021 and certified by IRS on Quality systems ISO 9001:2015.
I look forward to welcoming all students who join the IMU Navi Mumbai campus to usher a glorious career at sea and assure the shipping industry that we strive to develop the best Nautical cadets in the industry.
