Indian Maritime University, Navi Mumbai Campus was formerly known as the Training Ship Chanakya (T.S. Chanakya). It is the shore based successor to the Training Ship Dufferin (1927-1972) and Training Ship Rajendra (1972-1993), where the training of Merchant Navy Officers in India started in the year 1927. Training on T.S. Dufferin and subsequently T.S. Rajendra continued till the year 1993. After that it was replaced by shore-based academy namely Training Ship Chanakya-the first pre-sea training institution in India. Originally, it was under the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai in the Ministry of Shipping. In 2008, this campus came under Indian Maritime University. In 2017, it was named as Indian Maritime University, Navi Mumbai Campus. IMU NMC is situated near Karave Village Nerul, Navi Mumbai, spread across 40 acres; beside the picturesque Palm Beach Road. IMU-NMC has been awarded with Grade A-1, during CIP by I.R.S. The campus is certified by I.R.Q.S. for ISO 9001:2015 standards of QMS
