Centre for Endangered Language Studies
The Centre for Endangered Language Studies (CELS) at IIT Patna is set to work for the minor / tribal / endangered languages of the state of Bihar and adjoining areas. In addition, the centre aims to collaborate with the institutes and universities of the neighboring states to work for minor / tribal / endangered languages along the state borders.
Vision
To help the endangered language communities to revive and maintain their languages and also instill a sense of pride and loyalty towards their native language.
Mission
- To make the Centre one of the leading centres working on the preservation of endangered languages in the country and worldwide.
- To explore and devise new techniques for language documentation that can be shared with larger community.
- To create database of all such languages comprising grammatical descriptions, dictionaries and documentation.
- To create annotated resources and tools for Natural Language Processing (NLP) in endangered languages.
