IMU Navi Mumbai

The history of the Navi Mumbai campus goes back to 1927, when nautical training commenced on Training Ship [TS] Dufferin. After TS Dufferin's decommissioning, cadets' training began in the TS Rajendra from 1972 onwards.

The training moved to a shore-based academy - TS Chanakya - in 1993 to offer broad-based education, including personality development.

The erstwhile maritime training institute TS Chanakya became the Navi Mumbai Campus of IMU.

IMU Mumbai Port Campus

The Mumbai Campus of IMU was created by merging two legacy institutes – (i) Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Advanced Maritime Studies (LBS CAMSAR) and (ii) Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI).

LBS CAMSAR was established in 1948 to offer a range of post-sea training courses for merchant navy personnel.

The Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET) was established in 1949 by the Govt. of India with two institutes located in Mumbai and Kolkata. DMET, Mumbai, was renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in 1995.

The Campus offers the following programmes – (i) B.Tech (Marine Engineering), (ii) Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Engineering (PGDME)

IMU Kolkata Campus

The Kolkata Campus of IMU was created by merging two legacy institutes – (i) Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) and (ii) Indian Institute of Port Management (IIPM).

The Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET) was established in 1949 by the Govt. of India with two institutes located in Mumbai and Kolkata. DMET, Kolkata, was renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in 1995.

IIPM was established in 1965 to offer professional training programmes to employees of the port sector.

IMU Chennai Campus

The history of the Chennai campus can be traced back to 1984 when the National Institute of Port Management (NIPM) was set up as an autonomous body by the Government of India with technical assistance from UNDP/UNCTAD to offer professional training courses to personnel in the ports sector.

In 2006, the institute was renamed National Maritime Academy (NMA), with a mandate to train personnel from all maritime industry sectors, including ports.

The NMA became the Chennai Campus of IMU in the year 2008.

IMU Visakhapatnam Campus

The erstwhile National Ship Design and Research Centre (NSDRC) became the Visakhapatnam Campus of IMU.

NSDRC was established in 1991 as a research centre to cater to the needs of the government and industry in the domains of ship design, shipbuilding, and ship procurement.

The Visakhapatnam Campus has two premises. The main Campus is located in the Vangali village of Sabbavaram Mandal, whereas the old Campus is situated in the Gandhigram area.
