IMU Mumbai Port Campus consists of two Premier legacy Institutes namely Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research (LBS CAMSAR) and Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) (erstwhile DMET). Both these Institutes have been training Mariners for more than 7 decades. They were set up by the Government of India immediately after Independence as dream projects of a new India as she was expanding her horizon in the Maritime field.
Lal Bahadur Shastri, Nautical and Engineering College Bombay was founded in 1948 under Government of India. It is a premier Institute for ‘post sea’ training of Merchant Navy Officers of Navigation as well as Engineering Departments. The College was renamed as Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research (LBS CAMSAR) in 1994.
The Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (D.M.E.T) was established in 1949 to satisfy the growing needs of Marine Engineers in India. The Institution had its Headquarters at Calcutta and a branch at Bombay. The Institute has been renamed as Marine Engineering and Research Institute in 1994.
On 14th November 2008 on the formation of Indian Maritime University (IMU) a Central University / Government of India these legacy Institutes came under the IMU.
The Campus is located on Hay Bunder Road, Sewri, Mumbai. It has about 8 acres area with about 180 m sea-front. The Campus has more than 25,000 sq.m of built up floor area for Classes, Laboratories, Simulators and Hostels. There are separate buildings for Pre-Sea and Post-Sea Training, three spacious Hostels, a 250-seat auditorium, swimming pool and state of art simulators. The boat-pool has motor boat, whaler and lifesaving boats.
It is an ISO 9001:2015 Certified Campus. has also undergone CIP of DG Shipping and awarded A+ certificate.
