About The Campus

IMU Kolkata Campus was founded in 1949 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as “Directorate of Marine Engineering Training” (DMET). It was renamed “Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI)” in 1995. Its 33 acres campus has 6500 Sq. mts of built-up area and the free area of 52% of the campus area. The proud edifice at P–19, Taratala Road, Kolkata - 700 088 symbolizes the birth of Marine Engineering training in India. The Institute was established at the onset of Independence in 1949 to satisfy the growing need for marine engineers in India. The Institution earlier named as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training had its headquarters in Calcutta and a branch at Mumbai, under the Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). The Institute was renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute in 1995 and became part of Indian Maritime University in 2008.
