Physiology

The Physiology Department is housed in the Academic Block building of All India Institute of Medical Science, Bhubaneswar. The first theory class of the department began on 26.09.2012, following a remarkable orientation programme which was held for the first batch students of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. Since its inception in 2012, the Department of Physiology made major contributions in academics as well as in exploring the fundamental aspects of Human Physiology.

Physiology department houses research and teaching laboratories, faculty offices, seminar room, departmental library, store room and departmental office. The Department has well equipped Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Clinical research laboratories. The clinical research laboratory is equipped with, nerve conduction velocity machine, ECG, EEG, Vascular function analysis, Polysomnography, Electrogastrogram (EGG), and Treadmill used for various teaching and research paradigms. The department has a well-equipped Cellular, biochemical and Molecular Physiology for research and PG teaching. These research facilities harbor real time PCR, Thermocyclers, SDS PAGE, Western blot apparatus, 2D PAGE, Agarose gel running system, Gel documentation system, Cell culture Facility (CO2 incubator, Biosafety Cabinet, Inverted Microscope), Refrigerated Centrifuge, -80°C Freezer, -20°C Freezer, Spectrophotometer, ELISA reader, Millipore water purification system, Microtome, Tissue Bath, Trinocular Microscope, Binocular Microscope, Fume Hood, Incubator, weighing balance, 4°C freeze etc. Our teaching and research are potentiated by interactions and collaborations with both basic science departments as well as clinical departments and subspecialties.

The Department also provides laboratory services like identification of Thalassemia, G6PD, Congenital Deafness, Congenital Cataract, EEG, Nerve conduction Test and PFT to patients visiting AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

I am glad to be the Head of the Department of Physiology which is a team of very knowledgeable Faculties and sincere residents and tutors. The department of Physiology has always functioned as a team, wherein we all intend to strive for excellence and put in our best effort in both the frontiers of teaching and research. We look forward to collaborate with other departments in future for a holistic growth of our Institution.

Major Achievements:

Physiology has always formed the basis of medical education by providing insights into the fundamental mechanisms of functioning and interactions that occur in the human body. It is this understanding of normal functions that forms the basis for diagnosis and treatment that also fosters scientific inquisitiveness among students.

The Department of Physiology is engaged in imparting knowledge to the undergraduate students thereby participating in fulfilling the desired criteria for being Indian Medical Graduate as envisioned by the Medical Education Regulator, Government of India.
The department also nurtures post-graduate students by training them to become a competent physiologist capable of conducting independent research for the advancement in medical sciences and to become a good medical teacher in Physiology.
The Department of Physiology has excellent faculties who have wide experience and knowledge in different fields of physiology thereby providing quality teaching and innovative research.
The department conducts several research projects independently as well as in collaboration
The department has published research papers in journals of repute.
The department also conducts national conferences, symposium and CME programmes frequently to update and foster research ideas.
The Department of Physiology had Organized the 33rd Annual Conference of Association of Physiologists of Odisha on 7th& 8th December 2019 at AIIMS Bhubaneswar
A Pre Conference Workshop was held on ‘Computer assisted learning” on 7th December 2019.
Organized a CME on ‘Care your Heart’. On the occasion of World heart day, on 27th September 2014
Conducted a “Hands on training Workshop on Microteaching” on 26th December 2014.
Organized the National Symposium on “Prediction, Prevention and Treatment of Genetic Disorders” on 27^th February 2016. (Funded by ICMR and SERB)
Organized a one-day symposium on 'Challenges in clinical neuroscience: From bench to bedside' on 01-11-2017 (Funded by ICMR & DST).

Bio sketch: Dr Goyal did his MBBS from G.R. Medical college Gwalior and MD from King George’s Medical University, Lucknow. He has acquired skills in molecular biology, mammalian experimental physiology and neurophysiological diagnostic techniques. He was awarded “H.H. Loeschke award” in 2007 for innovative technique in respiratory physiology by Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India. He joined as senior resident at AIIMS New Delhi and apart from routine academic activities he worked on a research project “Understanding Endometriosis using high-throughput proteomics” under Professor D. Ghosh. Later he joined at AIIMS Bhubaneswar as assistant professor and played a key role in establishing/starting various facilities at newly developing institute. He continued his research work on rhythms in airways and autonomic tone for which he was awarded young scientist award by Indian society of chronomedicine. He started exploring cognitive functions and acquired skills in computational neuroscience after training from IIT Kharagpur and NBRC Manesar. He is currently interested in understanding functional connectivity patterns in addictive behaviors and Schizophrenia.

Research Areas: As a team in the department, we are working toward exploring neural correlates of cognitive functions in health and disease. Our research interests are in understanding changes in brain network patterns with emotional stimuli and cognitive tasks. In addition, we have collaborative research projects with department of Neurology and Psychiatry and also IIT Bhubaneshwar. We as a team are focusing on prediction of Epilepsy using chaotic time series analysis, prediction of treatment response in Schizophrenia and Depression using EEG functional connectivity patterns and studying alterations in functional connectivity patterns involved in addictive behaviours using naturalistic stimuli. My personal expertise lies in computational neuroscience for analysing event related brain potentials and functional connectivity patterns.

Dr Nibedita did her MBBS from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur and MD Physiology from SCB Medical College, Cuttack. As a part of her MD dissertation, she investigated spirometry changes in obesity. She joined IMS & SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, worked as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor for 5 years. During her stay at IMS and SUM Hospital she continued her research on respiratory physiology and diabetes. Later she joined AIIMS, Bhubaneswar as Assistant Professor in 2016. She had completed the certificate course in Palliative care in 2017 and attending pain clinic with department of Anaesthesia. She worked on NF-kB-miR-146a expression as molecular marker in diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients. She is currently exploring the mechanism of sarcopenia in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Research Areas: :

At present, I am working in the area of sarcopenia in type 2 diabetes mellitus in collaboration with department of Endocrinology. In future, we would like to establish a facility that will assess the skeletal muscle mass, strength and functional capacity of the muscle in various disease condition. We would also like to extend this work further to explore molecular mechanism and serum biomarkers for sarcopenia.

My research interest pertains to basic and applied approaches for understanding and mitigating cognitive impairment and depression related disorders through a ‘Systems Biology’ and ‘Man to Molecule’ approach. Some of the research activities being undertaken by our team through Intra-Mural and Extra-Mural funded projects are as under

Cell Physiology & Molecular Signalling in Hypoxia:

My research team focuses on understanding molecular signalling mechanisms that govern the survival and death responses of neuronal cells under hypoxic stress. Upstream signalling mechanisms that regulate Hif-1 alpha and Nrf-2 mediated survival responses as well as apoptotic and necrotic cell death pathways during hypoxic stress can be potential therapeutic targets for rescuing neuronal cells from hypoxic cell death during ischemia and stroke. We elucidate these signalling mechanisms using in vitro models of hypoxia.

Cognitive Physiology:

Understanding brain responses and underlying physiological mechanisms associated with comorbid depression has been another area of my research interest. The association of physiological factors like arterial stiffness and cerebro-vascular coupling with comorbid depression are being studied to identify possible non-invasive physiological interventions like activity induced brain plasticity for treatment of depression.

Stress Physiology:

Understanding physiological responses elicited by environmental stressors and the innate ability of human physiology to adjust to these stressors is the key to devising prophylactic approaches for improved endurance. My team is attempting to understand the role of specific bio molecules and ions that can prevent heat stress induced RBC fragility and heme toxicity through regulation of gardos channels.

Functional Food & Nutraceuticals:

Investigating the potential of nutraceuticals and natural adaptogens to ameliorate stress induced alterations in human physiology is an important area of research being pursued in my lab. We have identified cardioprotective and anti-hypertensive potential of Seabuckthorn seed oil and prophylactic potential of salidroside in rhodiola root during hypoxic stress.

Dr. Priyadarshini Mishra has completed her M.B.B.S from VSS Medical College Burla. She has been awarded 4 gold medals for academic excellence. She then completed her Post-Graduation in Physiology from VSS Medical College Burla. She was awarded with “Purnamasi Devi memorial award” for her work on exercise physiology, by the Association of Physiologists of Orissa.

She worked as Senior Resident atVMMC & Safdurjung Hospital, New Delhi, for a brief period and later joined LTMMC & Sion Hospital , Mumbai and worked for 8 years as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. During her stay at LTMMC, she worked towards improving medical education and introduced innovative teaching learning methods and she was awarded fellowship by Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). She also contributed as a resource faculty for medical education workshops .She pursued her research in Neurophysiology and explored the effect of loud music on cognition.

Dr. Mishra joined AIIMS Bhubaneswar in 2016 as Associate Professor. She continued her research interest in neurophysiology with research projects on sleep deprivation and emotions, neurodegeneration in OSA, role of sleep spindles in learning and memory. She started IONM ( Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring) services at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. She developed interest in intractable epilepsy while doing ECoG for epilepsy surgery. Consequently she is currently exploring the role of ketogenic diet, sleep architecture and microbiome in drug resistant epilepsy.

Research Areas

Our research team is trying to understand the neural underpinnings of sleep, epilepsy, schizophrenia and depression in collaboration with Neurology and Psychiatry departments at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

We are exploring the effect of sleep deprivation on emotions and cognition using quantitative EEG and ERP, mechanism of neurodegeneration in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), role of sleep spindles in motor learning, neural correlates of addictive behaviours using EEG functional connectivity, prediction of treatment response in schizophrenia and depression based on brain network connectivity patterns.

My interest lies in interventional research in intractable epilepsy and sleep. I am currently exploring gut brain communication and the role of ketogenic diet, sleep and microbiota in drug resistant epilepsy.

Bio sketch :

I received my postgraduate degree (M.Sc, Medical Physiology) from KMC, Manipal and did doctoral thesis work under Prof.G.K.Pal, JIPMER, Pondicherry. During my doctoral work, I studied the role of hypothalamic (ventromedial hypothalamus) and limbic nuclei (such as basolateral amygdala and nucleus septal lateralis) to understand the interaction between estrogen and dopamine in the regulation of ingestive behaviours and body weight in ovariectomized rat model. After obtaining the PhD degree, I worked as faculty in various medical colleges and contributed in designing the curriculum and developed blueprint for written and skill assessment examinations. He continued his research work in the field of neurophysiology and explored the role of predator stress in learning and memory using zebrafish model. Later I joined at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar as Associate Professor in 2016. At AIIMS I focused my research on studying the language comprehension using N400 event related brain potential. Simultaneously I also had opportunity to study the association between zinc and NMDA receptor peptides in epilepsy in collaboration with department of Neurology. Currently, we are exploring cognitive neuroscience of voluntary movements using EEG and ERPs in collaboration with department of Psychiatry at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.

Academics:

Undergraduate (MBBS) diadectic lectures,flipped classes, Case- based learning, Problem based Learning,Concept mapping and practical classes in small groups are taken effectively supplemented with tutorials, seminars and many student based activities.
The department has also started the post graduate (MD) course for Physiology from 2018 with a goal to prepare basic science researchers and academicians for the society. At present we have seven(7) MD candidates and six (6) alumini from the department.
The department has PhD programme to prepare students for a research career in basic and applied sciences. One faculty has joined as an in- service PhD candidate in 2019 in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry.
The Department imparts Post-Graduate teaching-learning process through conduction of seminars, group discussions, practical and discussion of research articles in Journal Club. The Department envisages preparing post-graduate students as highly competent Medical Teachers and Researchers.
125 undergraduate students (MBBS) are admitted in each academic session.We impart horizontal and vertical integrated teaching classes in collaboration with other basic science departments and clinical disciplines with an aim to develop their understanding of abnormal disease state and develop clinical acumen.
All the faculty members of the Department of Physiology are involved in Undergraduate teaching of MBBS, B. Sc. Nursing (Hons.) and Paramedical courses.

Research Areas and Major activities

The Department fosters research in basic and applied Physiology thus lending support to medical diagnosis and therapy. At present, the research of the Department of Physiology focuses on Genetics Disorders, Cognitive Science, Electrophysiology, Genomics and Neurobiology.

The department of Physiology supports basic research that increases our understanding of biological processes and thus lays the foundation for disease diagnosis and treatment. The faculties of the Department of Physiology have the following projects under various funding agencies.
