About the Department/Division

About the Department/Division:The Dept. of Biochemistry of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, was established in 2012.  This Department is well recognized for its quality teaching of undergraduate and post-graduate students, patient care (laboratory service), medical research, training, and Ph.D. programme.  The Department conducts MD, PhD courses for graduate and post graduate students apart from undergraduate courses for medical, paramedical and nursing students.  Lectures and practical classes with a foundational understanding are being carried out for undergraduate & post graduate medical (MBBS, MD, PhD) as well as undergraduate Nursing and Paramedical students with innovative teaching techniques.  The Dept. is also providing 24x7 Laboratory service on Biochemical and immunoassay parameters to OPD, IPD, EHS & BPL patients.  New born screening on metabolic disorders are also being conducted by the Department. We also participate in the External Quality Assessment Scheme (EQAS) run by Dept. of Clinical Biochemistry, Christian Medical College, Vellore.  Laboratory is connected with HIMS / C-DAC. The faculty are involved in biomedical research, the funding being obtained from research grants of intramural sources and National as well as International funding agencies. The Department also provides research training to institute under graduate students in form of ICMR STS projects. Currently there are seven faculty members and 16 staff members in the Dept.

Message from Head of the Department/Division: We aim to establish AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, as a Centre of Excellence for Teaching, Research, and Patient care with ever-expanding diagnostic services. We envision expanding the diagnostic facility on i.) Molecular Diagnostics for cancer, neurologic disorders, metabolic disorders, ii) Laboratory for immunodeficiency disorders, iii) Laboratory for nutrient, toxin, and heavy metal analysis. iv) Pneumatic Tubing system for specimen transportation in Clinical Laboratory etc.  Along with this, we aim to create leaders in this field of medical science who would be an asset for the State and the Nation to provide excellent services.

Major Achievements: 

i.  Functioning of Clinical Laboratory since 2013.

ii. Laboratory for Newborn screening since Feb 2021. 

iii. Started MD Course from 2017. 

iv. Started Ph.D. Course in 201
