Department of Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT

About the Department:

Nuclear medicine is a branch of medicine that uses unsealed radioactive substances in diagnosis and therapy. The Nuclear Medicine department at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar was started in the year 2018 under the mentorship of Dr Kanhaiyalal Agrawal and functions regularly from there on. More than 5000 nuclear scans and therapies are done every year. Currently the department has state-of-the-art Dual Head Gamma Camera (GE Discovery NMCT 670) with 16 slice CT providing only SPECT-CT facility in the state of Odisha. Further, the department has state-of-art 128 slice time of flight PET-CT. On therapy aspect, low dose iodine therapy for thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer, bone pain palliation for cancer pain, Lu-177 PSMA therapy for prostate carcinoma, Lu-177 DOTATATE therapy for NET and radiosynovectomy facility are available.

Message from Head of the Department:

The practice of medicine is always in a state of flux, and is more so in today's environment of advanced technologies. Nuclear Medicine comprises one of the significant parts of these new ideas and inventions. These advances, however, also require us to modify our vision and take on the challenge of new ideas. This is where our department thrives - in an environment of innovation and transformation. The Nuclear Medicine department in AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, doesn’t have a long history; however, it has achieved significantly on all fronts like patient care, research and education. Currently we have three faculty members. We have started MD Nuclear Medicine course in the year 2021. The MSc Nuclear Medicine Technology course will be started soon. With the available advanced facilities, we hope to attract new talent to our team. Our department prospers because of the dedication and commitment of the team who truly believe in a multidimensional approach to education, research and patient care.
