COMMUNITY MEDICINE AND FAMILY MEDICINE

About the Department/Division:

The Department of Community Medicine and Family Medicine is located on the third floor of Academic Block, AIIMS campus, where it shifted from a temporary location on 7th January 2013. It is providing education & training for the undergraduate and postgraduate students, hospital, and community-based health services. The department has ten sanctioned posts of faculty members, ten senior residents and six postgraduate students per year. There are three peripheral centers; two rural health and training centers (RHTC), at Tangi and Mendhasala and one urban health and training center (UHTC) at Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar. There are four special clinics in the AIIMS Bhubaneswar hospital: namely, Immunization and Yellow fever clinic, Non-communicable disease clinic, Preventive Oncology and Integrated Testing and Counselling Centre.  The department has a Resource Centre for Public Health Nutrition, which has a fellowship course.

Thank you for browsing through our department profile. I hope that you find and like what you are looking for. We currently have nine full time, dedicated faculty members, seven diligent senior residents, 15 aspiring postgraduate students, and three promising fellowship students besides the committed support staff in the field and the department. We are providing quality teaching and training for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and providing comprehensive health services through three peripheral health centers and four special clinics in the hospital. We teach undergraduate students from 1st to 7th semesters and ensure that they have rich, hands on experience in the community. The interns are posted in the department for three months and they are rotated in all the centers and clinics. They have residential posting in one of the centers for a month. The postgraduate students of the department undergo training in the department centres/clinics as well as in the related clinical departments like Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Administration, etc. They also undergo residential training in one of the centers for six months.

 

There are collaborative research going on with other Institutes of National Importance (INIs), the State of Odisha and international organizations. We intend to make an impact on population health through best educational practices and quality research. Recognizing the importance of research dissemination and scientific scholarship, the department publishes a bi-annual Indian Journal of Community and Family Medicine and has released 13 issues since 2015. The department routinely conducts health awareness activities both in the hospital and the field practice areas.

Major Achievements of the department:

  • Successfully published 13 issues of the “Indian Journal of Community and Family Medicine” under aegis of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GOI from 2015. The journal is available online at www.ijcfm.org.
  • Organized the 1st National Symposium on Education and Practice in Community Medicine in November 2019.
  • Organized state conference of 38th Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine (IAPSM) Odisha State Branch in January 2020 at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.
  • Was the first department in the institute to organize workshops for faculty development on Research Methodology and Biostatistics in 2013.
  • Established “Resource Centre for Advancement in Public Health Nutrition” and Fellowship program since 2019 and it is amongst the first in the medical schools in India.
  • Conducting various funded research projects with financial assistance from ICMR New Delhi, UNICEF, Govt. of Odisha and from various national and international organizations / institutions. A total of 28 projects have been/are being conducted in the department.
  • Published 189 articles in peer-reviewed journals till 2020.
  • Previous HoD Prof. (Dr) Vikas Bhatia (2012-2020) joined AIIMS Bibinagar as Executive Director from May 2020.
  • Won first prize for Awareness generation competition on COVID appropriate behavior among all departments at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
  • Junior Residents of the department won accolades in paper presentations and quiz competitions during various conferences.
