ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The indigenous system of medicine comprises of diversified interdisciplinary sciences like Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy and Sowa Rigpa (the Himalayan medicine) collectively known as Ayush. The department of AYUSH, AIIMS Bhubaneswar was established in the year 2016 with aim of mainstreaming AYUSH and to provide clinical services in different systems of Ayush. Subsequently on appointment of regular AYUSH doctors in the department strengthened the clinical services. Currently the department comprises of 4 regular medical officers from both the streams of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy and a regular Yoga instructor. The department cater services to different category of patients like arthritis, piles, neuromuscular diseases, skin and hair diseases, PCOS and palliative care to cancer patients. Cross-referral of patients, collaborative and integrative patient care are the values and ethos of the department. The department is relatively young and committed to provide highest standard of services in the preventive, promotive and curative clinical care in the available facilities of Ayurveda, Yoga and Homoeopathy. In future endeavors the department is ready to innovate and foster interdisciplinary research. Further in the process of continuous development the department will augment specialty services like Panchakarma, Ksharasutra for anorectal diseases and Yoga services for wellbeing and health promotion. Patient based learning and relevant solution through integrative model approach are followed in the department. The main objective of the department is to prepare and establish the department from the baseline to make future ready to provide highest standard of clinical services and involve in integrative research through equity in knowledge sharing and harnessing the potential of all the AYUSH systems available in the department.

The acronym AYUSH is a conglomeration of different indigenous medical systems practiced and prevailed in India and its neighboring countries, like Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy and recently added Sowa-Rigpa (Amchi or the Himalayan medicine).
This century posed a greater challenge in management of non-communicable and infectious diseases and the reasons are multifactorial. In this context AYUSH system has a major role to play in providing preventive and promotive health care services based on strengths of each stream of AYUSH. The core values of AYUSH system of medicine are the holistic approach to diseases through the application of mind, body and soul principles. Each stream of AYUSH has its own strengths in addressing health and disease conditions. Synergy between these systems can provide better solutions to address current health problems.
Building the department from baseline to enable for providing highest standard of clinical services to meet the rising demand of people is the prime area of focus in recent. Continuous development and addition of newer services in the department will be the most priority. Collaborative efforts and shared responsibility are the key requirements to achieve these goals. Cross referral of patients, problem-based learning and knowledge sharing will pave the way for interdisciplinary research across the other department inside the institution.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES:
The faculties of the department of AYUSH are engaged in teaching of M.Sc. 1st year Nursing students as per requirement of their curriculum with regards to AYUSH system of medicines.
RESEARCH AREAS:
Ayurveda- Osteoarthritis, APD, Hemorrhoids, Psoriasis, Diabetes, PCOS, Cancer prevention and palliative care, Lifestyle modification for NCDs.
Homoeopathy- Migraine, Depression, IBS, Allergic Rhinitis.
Yoga- Lower back pain, Diabetes, Migraine pain, Depression, Hypertension.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES:
The department is engaged in awareness program on health promotion and preventive activities like COVID19 appropriate behavior campaign. The department celebrates Ayurveda Day, International Yoga Day and World Homoeopathy Day every year and organizes seminars/webinars. An AYUSH bulletin was published on the occasion of 4th Ayurveda Day 2019. A webinar was organized on 16th November 2020 on “Ayurveda for COVID19 Pandemic”.
