Radiotherapy
About the Department/Division:
The Department of Radiotherapy was founded by joining ofDr. Dillip K. Paridaas Professor & Head andDr. Saroj K. Das Majumdaras Assistant Professor in April 2013. The Department initiated its clinical activity in form of Day Care service from June 2013 which was inaugurated by Mr. Kesav Desi Raju, the then Secretary of Health & FW, GoI. Subsequently the department started adding more and more services to cancer patients in form of Chemotherapy, Pain, Palliation and other support services. High Energy Linear Accelerator, High Dose Rate Brachytherapy and CT Simulator machines were installed and commissioned in 2018 following which the spectrum of services provided by the department has become complete. The LINAC facility was opened by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Union Minister Petroleum. At present the department provides services in form of OPD, IPD, Day Care, External Beam Radiotherapy & Brachytherapy. All patients receive Conformal Radiotherapy. The department provides high precision radiotherapy procedures like Stereotactic Radiosurgery & Radiotherapy, Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy, Image guided Radiotherapy. The department also performs interstitial brachytherapy.Dr. Sandip Kumar Barik joined the department as Assistant Professor in 2020.Shri Sasank Sekhar Beura, Bijay Kumar Barik and Dillip Kumar Sahoojoined as Medical Physicist in 2017 and 2020 respectively. From five persons who started the department in 2013, now grown to 52 persons in 2021. Every day 80-120 patients attend OPD, 45 patients receive treatment from Day Care, 65 patients receive radiation treatment and 15 patients receive IPD services. Every year the department provide services to more than 20,000 patients. The department has started Hospital Based Cancer Registry Program (HBCR) since 2017.

Besides regular patient activity, the department also provides advice on Genetic Cancers (Familial Cancer Registry) and also undertakes patient Awareness ProgramCancer Education and Learning (CEAL)
The department has started a strong academic program. Besides MD teaching program, the department provides Internship Program for Medical Physicist, Post-Doctoral Fellowship program in Palliative Medicine, Medical Technology course in Radiotherapy and radiodiagnosis. In addition, the department participates in Undergraduate study program. BSc and MSc Nursing students come to the department for completion of their academic curricula.
The department from time to time collaborate with prestigious Institutes of National Importance like AIIMS, Delhi, JNU, Delhi, IIT, Bhubaneswar, ILS, Bhubaneswar and carry out various Research Projects.
Message from Head of the Department/Division:
The department of Radiotherapy believes in working as a team, started its journey from April 2013 as an infant and has grown to a fully functional young adult in 2021 with all its divisions becoming fully functional. We believe in providing Quality treatment to cancer patients than Quantity. In spite of having one radiation machine, the department provides service to 40-45 patients in form of day care and 60-65 patients treated byConformal form of Radiotherapy. Very soon the department is going to add a second radiation machine in form of High Energy Linear Accelerator and after that the quantity of patients can also be improved further. We treat all our patients with all forms of Conformal Radiotherapy.
Besides clinical activity the department has established a strong academic program. For Post Graduate Teaching Program, we are having a consolidated departmental treatment protocol which integrates further with the PG curriculum. The students from Undergraduate, BSc. & MSc Nursing also get their teaching and training from the department. In order to produce quality trained manpower, the department has started Medical Technology Course in Radiotherapy (MTRT) and internship program for Medical Physicist.
I keep my vision to make this department grow in line of a Centre of Excellence and establish this department as a research hub and regional training centre in various sub-areas of radiotherapy.
Major Achievements:
- Installation & Commissioning of High Energy Linear Accelerator
- Installation & Commissioning of High Dose Rate Brachytherapy
- Initiation of MD (Radiotherapy), PDF (palliative Medicine), MTRT & Internship Program for Medical Physicists
