Dentistry
The Department of Dentistry is consistently considered one of the best department of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. It began its glorious journey on a fine day of 04.06.2013 as a thin shed house near the left corner of AIIMS Bhubaneswar main gate with a limited workforce and facilities. On the very first day department had only three patients, but over time and with dedicated and honest efforts from staff, the Department gradually bagged the trust of patients. This leads to a gradual and consistent increase in the patient inflow not only from nearby areas but also from adjacent states, like West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Andrapradesh, etc. This led to a bigger space and infrastructure for better patient care. So, the Department relocated from a single-room tin house to the present General Medicine OPD on the ground floor, the OPD building, on 25.01.2014. Since then, two dental chairs, two faculties, two residents, one nursing officer, and one attendant put up their sincere efforts to run the Department in the best possible way. General dentistry has been practiced since the inception of the Department. And very soon, specialty services of Orthodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial surgery were added. The OPD and academics were also focused on and prioritized irrespective of very little manpower and small OPD area within the boundary of two rooms. The expansion of the OPD building led to another shift in location. After nine months of journey on the ground floor, dentistry OPD was shifted to its earmarked OPD area on 13.10.2014.
The first floor of A Block of OPD building houses the present Dentistry Department, and it has been eight years since it permanently shifted to the present location. Many resident doctors have gained knowledge, experience and have become the stepping stones of the pathway it has crossed. The Department was awarded as the BEST outpatient department of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar of the year 2014-15 for the first time and subsequently in 2016, 2018 and 2021. The next important milestone was the approval of the Postgraduate program, which was recommended on 24.06.2016 by the Standing Academic Committee (SAC) members. There was a continuous enhancement in the workforce and the facilities to deliver the oral health need to deserving patients effectively. Since then, specialized clinics have started functioning more efficiently in the branches of Orthodontics, Endodontics, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, and Oral Pathology. Though there are struggles and hurdles, the journey will be more pleasant when the beautiful destinations are passed by. One of such worthier victories is starting the integrated Postgraduate program, MDS in Orthodontics, on 1st January 2019. The first MDS student joined the Department, and full-fledged academics and research activities started from January 2019 onwards. Thus, academic junior residents are admitted for MDS orthodontics once every year and are trained in dent facial orthopedics, cleft lip palate, airway, contemporary orthodontics, and surgical and functional orthodontics. Simultaneously they are also trained in emergency care and general Dentistry.
The department conducts regular daily academic activities. All the faculty members actively participate in teaching theory classes to MBBS students. The faculty members are involved in various intra and extra-mural funded/non-funded research projects.
