The specialized diagnostic facilities including immunohistochemistry with a considerably large numbers of antibody panel, immunofluorescence study, Flowcytometry, molecular pathology etc are available in department. The department caters state of art diagnostic services in various super specialities including nephropathology, hepatopathology, GI pathology, neuropathology, pathological autopsies, lymph node and bone marrow studies, HLA-B27 and leukemia immunophenotyping, coagulation studies including factor assays, thrombotic work ups, etc.

The department presently contains eight faculty members, five senior residents and nineteen junior residents. The department is running post-graduation (MD) course since 2016. Additionally, the department is actively involved in teaching of MBBS, MLT and Nursing students.

Message from Head of the Department/Division:

The department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, started in the year 2013 with empty rooms and two faculty members. Since then, the department has grown enormously in all dimensions starting from basic to high end diagnostic facilities including immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, molecular diagnostics, pathological autopsy, flowcytometry, etc.

The undergraduate teaching, started with fifty MBBS students; between 2013-20 there were 100 students, and from 2020 onwards the number stands at 125.

In 2016, the department was the first among all to start the MD course in Pathology with two students per session. At present, there are 22 students in total with four students successfully completing their courses. The enormous load and varieties of diagnostic material available in this Institute has facilitated post graduate exposure and learning. The department has received extramural research grants from different funding agencies such as DST, SERB, DBT, ICMR, etc. The state-of-the-art Bio-Brain Bank as well as Molecular diagnostic facility for Breast and Lung cancer as a part of DHR-ICMR Advance Medical Oncology Diagnostic Services (DIAMOnDs) initiative, will also soon become a reality.

There are many more milestones to be achieved in the foreseeable future such as a dedicated research lab, facility for electron microscopy, pneumatic tubes for sample transportation to lab, post-doctoral fellowship courses (PDCC) and NABL accreditation.

Our objectives as a department are three-fold: a) training a future generation of highly skilled medical practitioners, who will contribute to society. b) diagnostic services to provide better health care at an affordable cost; and c) advance research module integrating basic and clinical personnel to add on knowledge to the scientific community.
