Anesthesiology and Critical Care
The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at AIIMS Bhubaneswar is officially functional since 2013. Anesthesia services are provided to all broad and super speciality surgical departments, both for elective as well as emergency cases. In addition, the department runs a 14 bedded intensive care unit. Out-patient department clinics consists of pre-anesthesia check-up clinic which are run from Mondays to Fridays, and pain and palliative care clinics which are scheduled on Thursdays. Anesthesia services are also provided for MRI, CT, ERCP, electroconvulsive therapy, radiotherapy, and cath labs on a daily basis. In-patient palliative care services as well as services for patients coming with acute and chronic pain are also provided. Peripheral services like emergency central venous access, intubation calls, cardiac arrest calls, etc. for in-patients as well as emergency ward patients are also provided. In the height of the covid pandemic, the department was at the forefront in the management of critically ill patients with Covid-19 disease.
The department is presently involved in postgraduate (MD, DM & PDF), undergraduate (MBBS), B.Sc. (Operation theatre & Anesthesia Technology), and B.Sc. (Nursing) teaching, clinical research and patient care. The department conducts regular weekly academic activities and all the faculty members actively participate in the undergraduate, nursing, postgraduate, and postdoctoral teaching. The students are sensitized and encouraged to get actively involved in research. The department has taken the forefront in starting integrated academic programmes in anesthesiology, and in critical care with other allied departments. In addition, regular zonal workshops are conducted by the department to improve the teaching and learning in this part of the country.
DM (Neuroanesthesia) and PDF (Cardiothoracic anesthesia) programmes under the department started in January 2019. Besides, approval has already been given for starting PDF in Pediatric Anesthesia, DM in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, and DM in Critical Care. The department is jointly involved with the department of Radiotherapy in running the PDF (Palliative Care) course. The faculty members are involved in various intra and extra-mural funded/non-funded research projects. Faculty and students of the department have presented their research work in various national and international conferences and have received prestigious awards and prizes. Faculty of the department are also involved in establishing many upcoming value-added centres like the Critical Care Hospital, Centres of Excellence, and the National Emergency Life Support Skill Centre.

- Approved for starting DM in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, DM in Critical Care, and PDF in pediatric anesthesia.
- Infrastructure & services: Modular operation theatres, intensive care unit, non-operating room anesthesia, and OPD clinics (PAC, Pain and Palliative Care)
- Equipment procured: High end anesthesia work stations, high-end Echocardiography machines, Ultrasound machines, Cell-saver machines, Fibreoptic scopes, Blood-gas analysers, syringe pumps, PCA pumps, Defibrillators, Cardiac-output monitors, fluid warmers, high-end ventilators, multi-para monitors, Simulation manikins (adult and pediatric), video laryngoscopes, high end flexible bronchoscopes.

PG/Postdoctoral Students: The department has approval for 30 seats for intake of postgraduate students in Anesthesiology and Critical care. The department also has approval for 22 seats for intake of DM/PDF in various subspecialities, such as Neuroanesthesiology, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Pediatric Anesthesia.
