Department of Gastroenterology

About the Department/Division:

The Department of Gastroenterology was established on 22nd April2016, with the joining of Dr.Manas Kumar Panigrahi as Assistant Professor. The Endoscopy services also began around this time with the help of two non-academic residents and two nursing officers for OPD services and a six bed ward. This single faculty status continued until February 2018, when Dr.Subash Chandra Samal came on-board as Professor.

The DM course in Gastroenterology was approved and the first student was admitted for the July academic session in the 2018. Dr H.K. Nayak joined the department as an Assistant Professor in the following year. At present, there are three faculty members in the department.

Each year we have an in-take of two DM students for the January session. The department has a dedicated endoscopic suite with a provision for 24/7 service. This is being managed by the posted residents and concerned faculty with the help of a group of efficient nursing staffs, headed by Mr Ajaya Ghosh R U, Assistant Nursing Superintendent.

We see more than 300 patients on our OP days. Apart from that, separate special clinics are in place on different days for Hepatology, Pancreatic Disorder and Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients. This  department focuses on high quality, advanced patient care for various complex gastrointestinal problems, training of the future health care professionals and a holistic  problem oriented research programme that is patient centric. The department offers cutting edge  modern technologies in several specialized areas such as ERCP, Spyglass Cholangioscopy, Endoscopic Ultrasound, motorized Spirus Enteroscopy, to name a few. Like any other INI, interdepartmental referral service is a routine practice. We are working hard towards building up a sustainable low cost  liver transplant programme, establishing a G.I. metabolic lab, which would include a translational unit ( FMT) for microbiome project and starting our very own departmental molecular lab.

Message from Head of the Department/Division:

It was a matter of pride and privilege for me to become the founding professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology of this prestigious institute of national importance. The initial journey was an uphill road, and many challenges are still at large. My responsibilities are three-fold - i.e., towards the needy patient, trainee residents, and my professional colleagues. I believe and ensure that, 1) the poorest of the poor patients receive the best care in my department, 2) DM trainees receive adequate exposure to different endoscopic intervention techniques, evidence based ethical approach to clinical problems and research, that would enable and empower them to become confident and competent physicians, 3) and my co-faculties have enough freedom to pursue their passion. I strongly believe in the saying -“I am because we are”.

The training offered in the department not only aims to create excellent and capable professionals, but also good human beings, because to live with one’s values is also a remarkable achievement. While all is said and done, a strong sense of work ethics goes a long way in contributing towards the cohesiveness and success of a unit.  In the context of research work and output, we have seen some commendable contributions over the years. However, at the same time the onus lies on us in adhering to established practices and guidelines.

Major Achievements:

Starting DM training programme in Gastroenterology.

Integrating advanced interventional endoscopic facilities with day today patient care .

SERB extramural research grant and many other collaborative research project.
