About the Department/Division:
The Department of Microbiology was established in 2013 and is providing a wide range of diagnostic services including bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, mycobacteriology, and molecular diagnostics. The laboratory has been approved under ICMR to perform SARS CoV-2 RTPCR testing and also the mentor institute for medical colleges of Odisha and West Bengal. The department is equipped with advanced diagnostic equipments to provide the quality diagnostic service with shortest possible turn around time.
Department has been designated as the “State level Virus Research Diagnosis laboratory by Department of Health Research” and “Advanced Mycology Center” by Indian Council of Medical Research. Department also offers infection control services to the hospital by generating monthly surveillance of healthcare associated infections with feedback and audit activities.
The Department is involved in postgraduate (MD), undergraduate (MBBS), B.Sc Nursing and Bsc MLT teaching learning activities and has also started PhD programmes. Various thesis topics pursued by the PG students have been awarded ICMR thesis grants and also won best paper award at various national and International conferences. At Present the teaching curriculum is well organized and follows the Medical Education Unit (MEU) of our institute. The postgraduate training aims to produce a postgraduate student who after undergoing the required training should be able to deal effectively with the needs of the community and should be competent to handle all problems related to his/her specialty including recent advances and research. All students are evaluated periodically for their progress by means of theory based exams as well as practical exercises.
The faculties continue to lead and coordinate the multicentric and interdepartmental research activity in various aspects of microbiology and are conducting several extramural research projects from reputed government funding agencies. In teaching, diagnostic and research activities department is playing a lead role in the State and country.
