Department Of Pediatric Surgery

The Department of Paediatric Surgery was started in May 2013 as a service department with one faculty member and later established in 2016 with joining of Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohanty (Additional Professor), Dr Bikasha Bihary Tripathy (Associate Professor), Dr Santosh Kumar Mahalik (Assistant Professor) and Dr. Akash Bihari Pati (Associate Professor). The MCh (Paediatric Surgery) course was started 2017 with joining of one student. Dr Subrat Kumar Sahoo (Associate Professor) and Dr Kanishka Das (Professor), joined the department in January and March 2018 respectively.

Besides the entire gamut of Paediatric and Neonatal Surgery, the department has a rich clinical experience with all subspecialities of Pediatric Surgery namely Paediatric Urology, Pediatric Hepatobiliary and Gastrointestinal surgery, Pediatric Oncology, Pediatric Thoracicsurgery, Pediatric neurosurgery & Disorders of Sex Differentiation. Minimally invasive surgery (Laparoscopy/ Throacoscopy/ Cystoscopy) and Paediatric rigid bronchoscopy procedures are judiciously combined to augment optimal surgical management of various disorders.

Message from Head of the Department:

Children are the biggest asset of the society and it is our privilege and humble service to mankind, being instrumental in their healing. It is the vision of all of us in the department to step into major reconstructive surgery and minimally invasive surgery in its niche areas with a meticulously planned, carefully monitored and evidence-based management protocol of global standard. All the trainees are nurtured professionally and considered as a member of the team, in our strive to grow in the learning process every day. The department aims to create an organised referral network linking the patient in the remote rural area of Odisha to the services at the Institute through primary care physicians.

Major Achievements:
  • We are the first among the six new AIIMS to start the MCh course in Paediatric Surgery.
  • Two of our alumni students have already joined as faculty in two Institutes of National Importance in India.
  • Organisation of specialty OPD clinics - Paediatric Nephrourology Clinic, Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Clinic.
  • Organisation and conduct of the Pediatric Solid Tumour Board
  • We are the referral centre for management of foreign body inhalation in children in Odisha.
  • We are the only centre in Odisha providing Paediatric Urodynamic services.

Academic Programmes:

Besides conducting the MCh (Paed Surg) program, the department participates in the following training courses: MBBS, BSc (Nurs), MS (Surgery), MSc (Child Health Nurs), MD (Paediatrics), and DM (Neonatology)

Special Clinics and services:

The following special clinics and patient care are organised by the department

  1. Paediatric Nephrourology Clinic (Friday, weekly) including Urodynamics lab (Saturday, weekly)

Research Areas

Besides active clinical research that culminates in the research publications listed herein, the following are the ongoing funded extramural research projects in the unit

  1. Incidence of neural tube defect and its detection on antenatal ultrasonography in an eastern Indian state: A population based cross sectional study. Funded by ICMR, Budget approved Rs. 30,20,471/-
  2. A novel device for detecting the proximal extent of pathology (Levelling) in Hirschsprung Disease- Funded by Department of Biotechnology, BIRAC through BIG grant. Estimated cost 49.12 lakhs
